It's out in theaters Wednesday: "Materialists," a glamorous love triangle between Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans.

Lucy (Dakota Johnson), a young and ambitious New York matchmaker, finds herself in a complex love triangle, torn between Harry (Pedro Pascal), the perfect match, and John (Chris Evans), her less-than-ideal ex.

Glamorous star trio

At the end of 2023, with Past Lives, our lives before, about the relationship across time of two childhood friends between Asia and the United States, Celine Song displayed her expertise to scrutinize complex human feelings and imbue everything with a hint of melancholy. For her new feature film, she surrounds herself with a trio of oh-so-glamorous stars: Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans (in a role the opposite of her Captain America) and signs a pure romantic comedy, which takes up all the codes of the genre. A genre magnified in the 1990s by Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill and When Harry Met Sally , but which has become extremely rare on the big screen.

The director's trick is to use a familiar framework to determine the extent to which love can be a source of negotiation. Here, the search for a soul mate involves physical, social... and monetary criteria, as if feelings were the result of precise calculations, related to the materialism mentioned in the title. A theory that Lucy confronts, who sees all her certainties called into question. The lively rhythm, the atmosphere of the Big Apple and the relevance of the situations do the rest, until they draw the viewer into a proposition much deeper than it appears at first glance.

BY CELINE SONG (United States), with Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, Chris Evans... Comedy. 1h49. Our rating: 4/5.
